A Healthy Lifestyle is a Choice…
Who’s Making the Choice for YOU?
By Lisa Lewis
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 68 percent of the total deaths in the United States are related to lifestyle and diet choices. Given this dramatic and very real statistic, healthy living should become a priority in our lives now. Not tomorrow, or next week…now!
Once we decide to choose differently, we put ourselves on the path to a vibrant and long life.
I am here to let you know that you can regain your health and change the way you feel. It requires a commitment to yourself and consistent energy to make better food choices, get more active and take more thoughtful care of yourself.
In the end, it will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made!
Get Started with Good Nutrition
Good nutrition is simply balancing your intake of the highest quality carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals and water – the six classes of nutrients. Get started by selecting whole foods that supply the proper nutrients and contain good fiber. Nutrients that are required in smaller doses such as fat, salt and sugar should be eaten in moderation.
Then, balance the variety of foods eaten. Control calories by trying to take in less or equal to what is expended during the day through activity and exercise
Watch Out for Empty Calories
Be on the watch for empty calories. We have plenty of food options with lots of calories that deliver no nutrition. Chronic disease thrives in this type of environment — diabetes, cancer, heart disease, you name it.
And, as Buddha said, “Every human being is the author of his own health or disease”.
Take the Next Step
The next step, is as simple as, well… a step! Exercise and regular activity are key factors in enjoying good health. But it is helpful to view the two separately.
Exercise is self-explanatory, but activity, although not necessarily strenuous, can actually be more beneficial.
Activity is movement. If we can add movement to everything we do, we reap incredible benefits. For example, stand up and or walk in place while you are talking on the phone.
Don’t just sit there. Get up and stretch or even jump around for 2 – 3 minutes every 20 minutes or so. Mix exercise with proper nutrition, and you are on your way to better health. It’s really that simple!
Pay Attention Now to Reap the Rewards
Our bodies are finely tuned instruments that require the proper maintenance to perform precisely and efficiently every day. Paying attention to our health now directly increases our ability to enjoy vibrant and independent lives as we age.
Take the time to educate yourself and work with professionals who can assist you in reaching your health goals. Anything worthwhile takes time and patience. Think of it as an investment in yourself that will allow you to reap the benefits for many years to come. The improved quality of your life will add a completely new dimension of joy and satisfaction to your life – every single day.
