Let’s discuss the next layer of deeper truths that actually determine your success or failure in any area of your life. It’s something that most people never look at. It’s your beliefs.

Beliefs are Thoughts Played Over and Over

Simply put, beliefs are thoughts played over and over again till they become something that you believe. Often the bulk of our beliefs are learned early in life from the people we spend the most time with, like our family, teachers, friends, etc. We also form beliefs based on our experiences and the meanings we associate to those experiences.

That being said, you can imagine that not all of our beliefs are things that are helpful in pursuit of our dreams. Some beliefs about ourselves are not very positive and actually work against us.

For example, what if you believe that exercise is work? Every time you think about exercise, you have this negative connotation that it’s work instead of fun or at least, worthwhile for you to do. 

My Big-Boned Belief

Beliefs left unexamined can actually sabotage us in ways we can never understand… till we look at what our beliefs are. When I finally really looked at what I believed about myself, I found I always believed I was “big boned”. With deeper examination of this belief I learned that I’m actually not big boned…but considered normal.

So where did my “big-boned” belief come from?  I learned that my parents referred to my chubbiness as being big-boned. They did not want to say I was chubby, so they coined big boned.

This belief created a lifetime of excuses for me about being “big boned” instead of the truth, which was I was fat!

Are Your Beliefs Working For YOU or Against YOU

What are your beliefs? Where do they come from? Are they working for you or working against you?  Only you can know the answers and only you can change your beliefs. You can literally change who you are by changing who you believe you are!

Here is the fastest way to start examining your beliefs: Sit quietly and start writing by beginning each sentence with “I believe…” and then finish the sentence.  Start with a topic that is easy and not so personal then get to the real beliefs you need to look at. The beliefs about who you are and what you do and what you think.

After you have gotten all that down on paper, start looking at where those beliefs originated from. Are they yours or someone else’s? Then just decide to change the belief to something that works for you and helps you live the life of your dreams!      

That’s the way to make positive and lasting changes, start from the inside out!
